Swift Transportation, the largest U.S. truckload carrier had more freight in the third quarter than it could handle, even with 300 more tractor-trailers hauling truckload shipments.

The earnings reports of Phoenix-based Swift and truckload competitors Werner Enterprises and Knight Transportation show freight demand rose to match and exceed truck capacity in the last quarter, with “overbooked” motor carriers adding incremental capacity when possible to keep up.
